What Is Caulk?

Caulk is a flexible sealing material that fills small gaps around siding, trim, windows, and joints. It helps block water and air from entering a wall or roof edge. Caulk comes in tubes and needs a caulk gun for many jobs. The right type depends on the surface and its movement.

Key Takeaways About Caulk

  • Caulk stays flexible after it dries.
  • Clean, dry surfaces help caulk bond well.
  • Caulk isn't the same as mortar or expanding foam.

How Caulk Works

A man caulks a gutter under a roof while another watches near a laptop outdoors

Caulk works by filling a narrow gap and forming a flexible seal. The material starts soft in a tube. After application, it cures into a firm bead that can move slightly as surfaces expand or shift.

A clean surface helps the bead stick. A worker cuts the tube tip, places the bead along the joint, and smooths the surface. Siding caulk often seals edges around trim, corners, and small openings. Sealant is a broad term that can include caulk and other products.

Different caulks suit different surfaces. Some work well on painted wood. Others bond better to vinyl, metal, or masonry. The label should match the surface and the joint.

From the AGM Gutters team

When we inspect siding, we look for cracked beads, open joints, and gaps around trim. We remove loose material before adding new caulk. Our team also checks that the surface is clean and dry, because dirt can weaken the bond.

Caulk in Practice: A Real-World Example

A siding repair may include an open gap where a trim board meets the wall. Caulk fills that joint and creates a smooth seal that helps keep water out.
