What Is Coil Stock?

Coil Stock is a long, rolled sheet of aluminum used to form gutter parts on site. A gutter machine shapes the flat metal into a channel that matches the planned gutter profile. Installers also cut coil stock for small trim pieces, such as end caps and flashing, during seamless gutter installation.

Local relevance: Arkansas's humid summers and heavy rain can expose poorly sealed trim and joints, so coil stock must be formed and fitted with care.

Key Takeaways About Coil Stock

  • It arrives as a rolled sheet, not a finished gutter.
  • A forming machine turns the sheet into gutter channel.
  • Coil stock isn't the same as a preformed gutter section.

How Coil Stock Works

Coil Stock feeds through a gutter machine. Rollers guide the flat sheet into a shaped channel. The finished channel comes out in the length needed for the roof edge.

The metal also supports small parts of the job. An installer can cut and bend it for an end cap, a corner piece, or a flashing detail. The machine must match the planned gutter profile. A poor setting can leave bends or marks in the metal.

Seamless gutters are formed from coil stock at the work site. The long channel has fewer joints than sections joined together from short pieces. Coil stock also lets the installer match the gutter length to the roof edge.

From the AGM Gutters team

When we plan seamless gutter installation, we check the roof edge and choose coil stock that suits the gutter profile. We inspect the sheet for dents before forming it. Our team also checks each cut and bend so trim pieces fit the roof and gutter edges.

Coil Stock in Practice: A Real-World Example

A home with a long roof edge needs a gutter that follows its exact shape. The installer feeds coil stock through a forming machine, then cuts the finished channel to fit that edge.
