What Is a Gutter Apron?

A gutter apron is a metal flashing piece placed along the roof edge. It extends into the gutter and guides roof water away from the fascia board. The apron also covers the gap between the roof edge and gutter. This helps keep water from slipping behind the gutter during rain.

Key Takeaways About Gutter Apron

  • It sits along the roof edge and reaches into the gutter.
  • Its shape helps stop water from getting behind the gutter.
  • A gutter apron isn't the same as a drip edge.

How Gutter Apron Works

Person holding a hammer and aligning metal flashing along a roof edge beside a gutter

A gutter apron rests under the roofing material near the roof edge. Its lower section reaches over the back of the gutter. Rainwater follows the metal and drops into the gutter channel.

The apron creates a smooth path for runoff. It also covers the space where the roof, fascia, and gutter meet. A drip edge may protect the roof edge, but its shape and placement can differ from a gutter apron.

During seamless gutter installation, the apron must line up with the gutter and roof slope. Poor alignment can let water run behind the gutter. Installers check the roof edge before placing the gutter and adjust the flashing as needed.

From the AGM Gutters team

When we install seamless gutters, we check how the roof edge meets the fascia and gutter. We place the apron so runoff enters the gutter without a gap. Our team also checks nearby flashing and seal points before the gutter is secured.

Gutter Apron in Practice: A Real-World Example

A home with a sloped roof has water running behind the back of the gutter. A gutter apron placed along the roof edge can guide that runoff into the new seamless gutter.
