What Is an Eave?

An eave is the lower edge of a roof that extends past an exterior wall. It helps move rainwater away from the wall and creates the roofline where gutters are installed. The eave may include the fascia, soffit, and drip edge, which support or guide water into the gutter system.

Key Takeaways About Eave

  • An eave extends past the outside wall.
  • Gutters attach along the roof edge.
  • An eave isn't the same as a fascia board.

How Eave Works

An eave forms the roof edge that reaches past the wall. Rain runs down the roof and reaches this edge. A gutter catches the water along that path.

The eave may include a fascia board and a soffit beneath the roof edge. The fascia gives gutter hangers a firm mounting surface. The soffit closes the space under the overhang. A drip edge may guide water into the gutter and away from the roof trim.

During seamless gutter installation, the gutter follows the eave across the roofline. Installers check the roof edge for a clear mounting path. They also account for corners, roof changes, and downspout locations.

From the AGM Gutters team

When we plan seamless gutter installation, we inspect the eave from end to end. We check the fascia, roof edge, and drip edge before placing hangers. We also look for uneven areas that could change the gutter’s position or water flow.

Eave in Practice: A Real-World Example

A ranch home has a roof edge that extends past its exterior wall. A seamless gutter follows that eave and carries rainwater toward a downspout.
