What Is a Soffit Panel?

A soffit panel is a flat piece that covers the underside of a roof edge or porch overhang. It gives the roof edge a finished look and can include small openings for air flow. Panels may be made from vinyl, aluminum, or other materials. They attach near the fascia and wall.

Key Takeaways About Soffit Panel

  • Soffit panels sit beneath roof edges and overhangs.
  • Vented panels help air move through the roof space.
  • Soffit panels aren't the same as fascia boards.

How Soffit Panel Works

A white perforated gutter or trim piece rests on a workbench in a workshop setting

A soffit panel covers the open space beneath a roof overhang. The panel spans between the wall and the fascia board. Fasteners hold it in place while trim pieces cover the edges. The panel must fit the shape of the roof line.

Some panels have vents that let air move into the attic. Vented sections use openings or slots across the panel. Solid sections block the view beneath the roof. A soffit vent may also be added as part of the same roof edge system.

How It Connects

The panel meets the fascia at the outer edge. It meets a channel or trim piece near the wall. Damage near either edge can affect the fit. Water from a roof or gutter issue can also reach the panel and nearby wood.

From the AGM Gutters team

When we install soffit panels, we check the roof edge and the nearby fascia board. We look for soft wood, loose trim, and blocked vents before fitting new material. Our team also checks that the panel meets the wall and roof edge cleanly.

Soffit Panel in Practice: A Real-World Example

A home has loose panels beneath the front roof overhang. During soffit installation, the old panels are removed and the edge is checked before new panels are fitted. Vented sections are placed where air flow is part of the roof design.
