What Is Gutter Pitch?
Gutter Pitch is the slight slope built into a gutter run so water moves toward a downspout. Installers set the slope along the fascia, the board behind the gutter. Proper pitch supports steady drainage and helps limit standing water, overflow, and debris buildup inside the gutter channel.

Key Takeaways About Gutter Pitch
- Gutter pitch is a slope, not the gutter material or shape.
- The slope directs runoff toward a planned downspout location.
- Pitch is often confused with roof slope or gutter size.
How Gutter Pitch Works

Gutter pitch runs along the length of a gutter channel, guiding water toward a downspout. The installer creates this slope by setting the gutter and its hangers at slightly different elevations along the fascia. The roof slope does not automatically set the gutter pitch.

Water follows the lower path in the channel as it leaves the roof. A downspout marks the drainage point, so the pitch must lead toward that opening without creating a low spot elsewhere. On longer runs, installers may direct water toward more than one outlet when the layout calls for it. Correct pitch works with the gutter shape, hangers, and downspout placement as one drainage system.

From the AGM Gutters team
When we install seamless gutters, we check the fascia line and plan the drainage direction before securing the gutter. Our team also checks for low spots after the run is set, since an uneven line can hold water even when the overall layout appears correct.
Gutter Pitch in Practice: A Real-World Example
A home has a long front roof edge with a downspout near one end. During seamless gutter installation, the gutter follows a gradual slope toward that downspout, so rainwater moves through the channel instead of collecting near the middle.
