What Is Runoff?

Runoff is water that flows across a roof or other surface after rain or melting precipitation. In gutter work, runoff travels toward the roof edge, enters the gutter, and moves through downspouts toward a safe discharge area. Its flow depends on roof shape, slope, surface area, rainfall, and the gutter system’s layout.

Key Takeaways About Runoff

  • Runoff moves across surfaces instead of remaining where precipitation lands.
  • Roof shape and gutter layout influence how runoff reaches downspouts.
  • Runoff is not the same as standing water, which remains in place.

How Runoff Works

Water pours from a roof gutter into a metal downspout over wet soil and rocks

Runoff begins when rain reaches a roof and flows down its surface. Roof planes guide the water toward the lower edge, where the gutter collects it. The gutter’s pitch then moves water toward a downspout, which carries the flow toward an outlet or extension.

Roof valleys, dormers, additions, and changes in roof direction can send water into different sections of the drainage system. A seamless gutter installation accounts for those paths during layout. The installer positions outlets and downspouts where they can receive water from the connected roof area. A downspout extension can carry discharge farther from the foundation, while a splash block spreads water at the ground.

From the AGM Gutters team

When we plan a seamless gutter installation, we trace how water leaves each roof section and reaches the gutter line. We check valleys, corners, pitch changes, and downspout locations so the system follows the actual runoff path. Our team also considers where discharge will leave the property.

Runoff in Practice: A Real-World Example

A roof section above a porch sends rainwater toward the porch edge. During a seamless gutter installation, the gutter collects that runoff and directs it to a downspout positioned near the corner, where an extension carries the discharge away from the foundation.
