What Is a Miter?

Miter is a gutter corner joint that connects two gutter sections where the roofline changes direction. The joint uses angled cuts, a corner piece, or both to guide rainwater around an inside or outside corner. A properly formed miter also helps limit leaks at one of the gutter system’s most vulnerable connection points.

Key Takeaways About Miter

  • Miters are designed for gutter corners, not straight runs.
  • Seals and fasteners affect how well a miter holds water.
  • A miter is not the same as a downspout elbow.

How Miter Works

A man shows a metal gutter piece to a woman at an outdoor table near a brick house

A miter joins gutter sections at an inside or outside corner. The adjoining pieces are cut or shaped to follow the roofline, then secured so water can pass through the turn. The joint may include a separate corner fitting, depending on the gutter design and repair method.

Water puts pressure on the connection as it changes direction. A clean fit helps the gutter maintain its channel, while gutter sealant closes small gaps at the joint. Fasteners support the connected sections and help keep the corner aligned. During a repair, the condition of the metal, the existing seal, and nearby hangers can affect how the miter is restored.

From the AGM Gutters team

When we inspect a miter during gutter repair, we check the corner alignment, the joint seal, and the nearby hangers. We also look for loose metal or staining that can show water escaping at the connection. Our repair approach follows the condition of the existing gutter and corner.

Miter in Practice: A Real-World Example

A roofline turns at the corner of a house, so two gutter runs meet at a miter. If the joint seal has failed, a repair may involve cleaning the connection, securing the sections, and resealing the corner.
