What Is Sealant?

Sealant is a material that fills small gaps and seals joints against water. Gutter workers apply it where gutter parts meet, such as end caps, miters, and outlets. The material stays bonded as the joint moves slightly. A sound seal helps stop leaks, but it can't fix damaged metal or loose gutter parts.

Key Takeaways About Sealant

  • Sealant stays flexible as joints move slightly.
  • Clean, dry surfaces help sealant bond well.
  • Sealant isn't a replacement for damaged gutter parts.

How Sealant Works

A person applies sealant from a caulking gun to a wooden railing outdoors

Sealant works by filling a gap and forming a water-resistant bond between nearby surfaces. Gutter workers place it along joints, seams, and edges where water could pass through. The material remains somewhat flexible after it sets.

A clean, dry surface helps the sealant stick. Dirt, old sealant, rust, or standing water can weaken the bond. Sealant can help close a small joint leak, but it won't hold a loose part in place or repair a split gutter.

Sealant and Caulking

Caulking is a broad term for materials used to fill gaps. People often use the words sealant and caulking in the same way. In gutter work, the product must suit outdoor metal joints and changing weather.

From the AGM Gutters team

When we inspect a gutter leak, we check the joint, nearby metal, and surface condition. We remove loose material and clean the area before applying sealant. We also look for movement or damage that could cause the leak to return.

Sealant in Practice: A Real-World Example

A miter joint may let water drip during rain because its seam has opened slightly. A gutter repair can clean the seam and apply sealant to close the gap.
