What Is a Splash Block?

Splash Block is a shallow, sloped drainage piece placed beneath a downspout outlet. The block receives water from the downspout and directs the flow away from the building foundation. Common materials include plastic, concrete, and molded composite. Its shape helps spread discharge across the ground while limiting soil washout near the wall.

Key Takeaways About Splash Block

  • A splash block sits below a downspout outlet.
  • Its slope directs discharge across nearby ground.
  • A splash block is not a downspout extension.

How Splash Block Works

Water pours from a white downspout into a black gutter tray on mulch outdoors

A splash block rests on the ground below a downspout outlet. Its raised back edge catches the falling water, while its sloped surface guides discharge outward. The outlet should point toward the center of the block so water does not spill beside the foundation.

Downspout extensions carry water farther from the wall through a connected channel. A splash block spreads water over the surface and works best where the surrounding grade already moves water away from the building. Soil, mulch, landscaping borders, or uneven ground can affect how well the discharge travels. The block should remain stable and clear of leaves so runoff can leave the outlet freely.

From the AGM Gutters team

When we install or inspect a downspout, we check that the outlet aims onto the splash block and that the block sits firmly on the ground. We also look for soil buildup, shifting, and grading that could send water back toward the foundation.

Splash Block in Practice: A Real-World Example

A home with a downspout near a flower bed may use a splash block below the outlet. The block directs runoff across the surface and helps keep the adjacent soil from washing against the wall.
