What Is a Water Diverter?

A Water Diverter is a small gutter part that redirects rainwater away from a roof edge, wall, doorway, or walkway. It helps guide water toward a downspout or another safe outlet. A diverter may sit under shingles or along the gutter edge, based on the roof and drainage layout.

Key Takeaways About Water Diverter

  • A diverter changes the path of flowing roof water.
  • Placement helps protect walls, doors, and walkways.
  • A diverter isn't the same as a downspout.

How Water Diverter Works

A metal roof edge flashing sits under shingles beside a gutter on a house roof

A water diverter catches or redirects rainwater as it leaves a roof edge. Its shape guides water toward a downspout outlet or away from a problem area. The diverter's position depends on the roof slope and the path water already follows.

Some diverters fit beneath roofing near the roof edge. Others attach to a gutter or sit above a doorway. A diverter should send water into the gutter without spilling over the front edge. The nearby gutter and downspout must also carry the added flow away from the building.

Water Diverter and Downspout

A diverter controls the first part of the water's path. A downspout carries that water down the side of the building. These parts can work together, but they serve different jobs.

From the AGM Gutters team

When we install downspouts, we check where roof water lands and where it needs to go. We place the diverter to guide water into the gutter or toward the downspout. We also check nearby trim, siding, doors, and walkways for signs of unwanted runoff.

Water Diverter in Practice: A Real-World Example

A roof section above a doorway sends water toward the entrance. A water diverter guides that flow into the gutter, where the downspout carries it away from the door.
