What Is Apron Flashing?

Apron Flashing is a sheet-metal component installed along a roof edge to guide water into the gutter and protect the fascia behind it. The material sits beneath the roofing edge and extends toward the gutter. Proper placement helps prevent runoff from entering the roof edge, wall, or fascia area.

Key Takeaways About Apron Flashing

  • Apron flashing extends from the roof edge toward the gutter.
  • Positioning controls whether runoff enters the gutter or reaches the fascia.
  • Apron flashing is not the same as a gutter apron-style attachment.

How Apron Flashing Works

Apron Flashing creates a sloped metal path from the roof edge into the gutter. The upper edge tucks beneath the roofing material, while the lower edge reaches over the back of the gutter. This position helps keep flowing water from slipping behind the gutter and wetting the fascia board.

Roof shape, gutter placement, and the existing edge metal all affect the installation. A roofer or gutter installer checks how these parts meet before adding or adjusting the flashing. Drip edge may protect the roof edge, while apron flashing focuses on the transition into the gutter. The two parts can work together, but they do not serve the same role.

From the AGM Gutters team

When we inspect a gutter installation, we check whether the flashing reaches the gutter and whether the roof edge leaves a path for water behind the fascia. We also look for bent metal, exposed gaps, and old flashing that no longer aligns with the gutter. These details help us plan the Seamless Gutter Installation accurately.

Apron Flashing in Practice: A Real-World Example

On a home with exposed fascia behind the roof edge, apron flashing can guide runoff directly into the new seamless gutter. The installer positions the metal so water does not spill behind the gutter during rain.
