What Is a Copper Gutter?

Copper Gutter is a rain gutter made from copper sheet metal. It collects roof runoff and directs water toward downspouts. Copper gutters have a bright metal color when new. Over time, the surface can darken and form a green patina. These gutters are often chosen for their appearance and long service life.

Key Takeaways About Copper Gutter

  • Copper develops a natural patina as it ages.
  • Seams and hangers must fit the roof edge correctly.
  • Copper gutter is not the same as copper-colored aluminum.

How Copper Gutter Works

Copper Gutter works by catching water that runs off a roof edge. The gutter holds that water in a sloped channel. Water then flows toward an outlet and enters the downspout.

Copper sections connect at seams along the roofline. Hangers support the gutter from below or attach it to the fascia (the board behind the gutter). Gutter pitch guides water toward the outlet. During gutter replacement, the old system comes off before the new copper sections are fitted.

Fresh copper has a warm, bright color. Air and moisture change the surface over time. The metal may grow darker and later develop a green patina. This surface change affects the look, but the gutter still serves the same drainage purpose.

From the AGM Gutters team

When we handle copper gutter replacement, we check the roof edge, fascia, and downspout path before fitting new sections. We also inspect each seam and hanger so the system follows the roofline and drains toward the planned outlet.

Copper Gutter in Practice: A Real-World Example

A home with worn metal gutters may receive copper sections along the front roof edge during gutter replacement. The new system directs roof runoff into downspouts while its surface changes color over time.
