What Is a Gutter Hanger?

A gutter hanger is a support component that attaches a gutter to the fascia board or roof structure. The hanger holds the gutter in position while allowing water to flow toward the downspout. Hangers may sit inside the gutter for a concealed appearance or remain visible beneath the gutter edge.

Key Takeaways About Gutter Hanger

  • Hidden hangers sit inside the gutter channel.
  • Spacing and attachment affect gutter stability.
  • A hanger is not the same as a gutter spike.

How Gutter Hanger Works

A gutter hanger connects the gutter to the fascia board or another sound part of the roof edge. The support carries the gutter’s weight and helps keep the channel aligned as water moves toward the downspout. Installers position each hanger along the gutter run and secure it through the gutter wall or from inside the channel, depending on the hanger design.

Hidden hangers are placed inside the gutter and fastened through the back of the gutter into the fascia. This design leaves fewer visible parts along the outside edge. A hanger must meet solid material to hold properly. Damaged or soft fascia can prevent a secure attachment, so the installer may need to address that condition before placing the gutter.

From the AGM Gutters team

When we install seamless gutters, we check the fascia before placing each hanger. Our team aligns the hangers with the gutter run and verifies that the supports hold the channel firmly without blocking water flow.

Gutter Hanger in Practice: A Real-World Example

For a home with a new seamless gutter run, the installer attaches hidden hangers through the gutter into sound fascia. The supports keep the gutter aligned as runoff travels toward the downspout.
