What Is a Crimping Tool?

A crimping tool is a hand tool that squeezes and shapes sheet metal to form a tight mechanical connection. In gutter work, the tool folds a gutter edge or end section so parts fit together securely. Sealant may be added when the connection must also resist water. The tool works without cutting the metal.

Key Takeaways About Crimping Tool

  • Its jaws shape metal through pressure.
  • Crimping helps gutter parts fit and hold.
  • A crimp is not the same as sealant.

How Crimping Tool Works

Two workers bend a metal gutter with hand tools on a cluttered workbench inside a workshop

A crimping tool has shaped jaws that press against sheet metal. The pressure bends a small part of the metal and leaves a firm fold. The fold helps connected pieces stay in place.

Gutter installers use the tool on areas such as an end cap or a joined gutter section. The tool must grip the metal without tearing it. A good crimp has an even shape and leaves the gutter ready for sealant when needed.

Crimping and sealing are different jobs

Crimping changes the shape of the metal. Sealant blocks water at a joint. Many gutter connections use both steps because the crimp provides a physical hold while the sealant helps close small gaps.

From the AGM Gutters team

When we install seamless gutters, we use a crimping tool to shape connection points and end sections. We check that the metal sits tightly before adding sealant where the joint calls for it. We also look for folds that could restrict water flow.

Crimping Tool in Practice: A Real-World Example

A crew cuts a gutter end for an end cap during seamless gutter installation. The installer uses a crimping tool to shape the gutter edge, fits the cap, and seals the joint.
