What Is an Ice Dam?

An ice dam is a ridge of ice that forms along a roof edge when melting snow refreezes near the eaves. The ridge can hold later meltwater against shingles and roof flashing. That trapped water may enter roof gaps or flow behind gutters, creating a drainage problem that gutter cleaning alone may not solve.

Key Takeaways About Ice Dam

  • Ice dams form at roof edges during freeze-and-thaw conditions.
  • Blocked meltwater may reach shingles, flashing, fascia, or gutters.
  • An ice dam is not the same as ordinary gutter ice.

How Ice Dam Works

A hand lifts melting ice from a snow-covered roof gutter, with icicles hanging along the edge

An ice dam develops when roof snow melts in a warmer area and freezes again near the colder roof edge. The frozen ridge interrupts the normal path of meltwater. Water can then collect above the ridge and press against shingles, flashing, or roof joints.

Gutters can become part of the blockage when ice covers the trough or downspout opening. During gutter cleaning, we look for packed debris, restricted outlets, and signs that water has backed up near the roof edge. A clogged downspout can worsen drainage, but clearing it does not remove an ice dam that has formed on the roof. Proper assessment separates an ice-related blockage from ordinary debris buildup.

From the AGM Gutters team

When we inspect a gutter cleaning concern linked to an ice dam, we check the roof edge, gutter channel, and downspout opening for restricted flow. We also look for staining, displaced material, or water paths behind the gutter. Those observations help us separate ice buildup from leaves, sediment, or a damaged drainage component.

Ice Dam in Practice: A Real-World Example

A home with melting roof snow may develop an ice dam along the eaves, where the frozen ridge holds water above the gutter line. During gutter cleaning, the inspection may reveal blocked outlets and staining near the fascia that need separate attention.
