What Is a Pop Rivet?

A Pop Rivet is a fastener that joins pieces of thin metal from one side. It has a hollow body and a center pin. A tool pulls the pin and expands the rivet inside the joined pieces. The expanded end holds the parts together when a screw or bolt cannot reach both sides.

Key Takeaways About Pop Rivet

  • The rivet expands behind the joined metal.
  • A rivet tool installs it from one side.
  • A pop rivet isn't the same as a screw.

How Pop Rivet Works

Hands hold a rivet tool and metal mesh over a metal gutter section on a wooden workbench

A Pop Rivet joins metal parts from the outside. The rivet body passes through aligned holes. A rivet tool grips the center pin and pulls it toward the tool.

As the pin moves, the back of the rivet body spreads inside the metal. The spread end locks the pieces together. The pin then breaks off near the rivet head. This leaves a small, firm connection on the outside.

Gutter repair work may use rivets at seams, corners, or small metal connections. A rivet tool must match the rivet size and material. Sealant may be added when the joint also needs protection from water.

From the AGM Gutters team

When we inspect a pop rivet, we check the rivet head, the joined metal, and the nearby seal. We replace loose or damaged rivets when the metal still has enough strength to hold a new fastener. We also look for movement that could reopen the joint.

Pop Rivet in Practice: A Real-World Example

A gutter seam may loosen after water enters the joint and the old fastener loses its hold. A technician can align the metal, install a pop rivet from the outside, and seal the seam.
