What Is a Pressure Washer?

A pressure washer is a powered cleaning tool that sends water through a narrow nozzle at high force. The focused spray removes dirt, algae, mold, and loose grime from outdoor surfaces. Pressure washers can clean siding, concrete, decks, driveways, and other areas when the water force matches the surface.

Key Takeaways About Pressure Washer

  • A narrow nozzle creates a focused water spray.
  • The spray must match the surface being cleaned.
  • A pressure washer is not the same as soft washing.

How Pressure Washer Works

A man in a cap sprays water into a rain gutter beside a shingled roof

A pressure washer uses a motor or engine to drive a pump. The pump pushes water through a small nozzle. The narrow opening focuses the water into a strong spray that loosens dirt and buildup.

The nozzle controls the spray shape and force. A wide spray covers more area with less force. A narrow spray reaches stuck grime with more force. The right setting depends on the surface. Vinyl siding, concrete, wood, and metal can need different care.

Soft washing uses cleaning solution and low water force. A pressure washer may support that process, but the two methods are not the same. A surface cleaner can help clean flat areas with an even spray.

From the AGM Gutters team

When we use a pressure washer, we check the surface before starting. Our team adjusts the spray pattern and force for the material. We take extra care near siding seams, window screens, painted trim, and gutter parts.

Pressure Washer in Practice: A Real-World Example

A pressure washer can clean dirt from a concrete walkway beside a home. The operator uses a suitable spray pattern so the water reaches the buildup without marking the surface.
