What Is A Rain Barrel?

Rain Barrel is a storage container that collects roof runoff from a gutter downspout for later outdoor use. A rain barrel usually connects beneath a downspout and holds water until you use it for tasks such as watering plants. It can reduce direct discharge near a foundation, but it does not replace a complete drainage plan.

Key Takeaways About Rain Barrel

  • A rain barrel stores collected roof runoff above ground.
  • Placement must keep overflow away from the foundation.
  • A rain barrel is not a downspout extension.

How Rain Barrel Works

Rain Barrel systems collect water as roof runoff travels through a gutter and downspout. A diverter or connected fitting directs part of that flow into the container. The barrel holds the water until you release it through a spigot or use another outlet.

Overflow control gives excess water a planned path when the container fills. The outlet should discharge where water will not collect beside the foundation. A Downspout Extension can carry overflow farther across the ground, while a Splash Block can spread flow near the discharge point. The setup must match the roof drainage path and the available space.

From the AGM Gutters team

When we plan a downspout installation that includes a rain barrel, we check the downspout path, barrel position, overflow route, and ground slope. We also make sure stored water will not send runoff back toward the foundation or interfere with nearby drainage.

Rain Barrel in Practice: A Real-World Example

A homeowner may place a rain barrel beneath a rear downspout to collect roof runoff for garden watering. The downspout connection and overflow route should direct excess water away from the house.
