What Is a Rain Chain?

Rain Chain is a decorative drainage component that guides water from a gutter outlet toward the ground. A rain chain uses linked cups or connected lengths of metal to control the water’s downward path. It can serve as a visible alternative to a closed downspout when the discharge area can receive and direct runoff safely.

Key Takeaways About Rain Chain

  • Rain chains remain open and visible along the water path.
  • A stable discharge area must receive the falling water.
  • A rain chain is not a gutter screen or filter.

How Rain Chain Works

A Rain Chain hangs below a gutter outlet and guides water downward through linked pieces or cups. Water follows the chain by surface tension and gravity. The design keeps the drainage path visible, so you can see how water leaves the gutter during rainfall.

The lower end needs a stable place to release water, such as a splash block, collection basin, or prepared drainage area. A Downspout encloses water and directs it through a pipe, while a rain chain leaves the flow exposed. Wind, heavy runoff, and poor ground drainage can affect how well the discharge area performs. The gutter outlet and chain connection must also remain aligned so water does not spill against the fascia or siding.

From the AGM Gutters team

When we plan a rain chain as part of Downspout Installation, we check the gutter outlet, attachment point, and discharge area together. We also look for siding, fascia, and foundation surfaces that could receive excess splash. Our team treats the lower landing area as part of the drainage design.

Rain Chain in Practice: A Real-World Example

A homeowner may use a rain chain below a porch gutter where an open water feature suits the home’s design. The lower end can direct runoff into a splash block or drainage basin that keeps water away from the foundation.
