What Is a Rake Edge?

A rake edge is the sloped edge of a roof that runs from the lower eave toward the ridge. It often includes the roof trim, fascia board, and nearby siding. In gutter work, this area helps show where roof water starts and where wind or wood damage may affect the roof’s side edge.

Local relevance: Arkansas has a humid subtropical climate, so damp wood near an unsealed rake edge can decay and affect nearby fascia or siding.

Key Takeaways About Rake Edge

  • It follows the roof slope, not the level lower eave.
  • Rake trim can meet fascia, siding, and roof covering.
  • A rake edge isn’t the same as a drip edge.

How Rake Edge Works

Rake edge follows the sloping side of a roof. The edge runs from the lower roof corner up toward the ridge. Trim may cover the exposed roof side. Fascia board and siding can meet this trim.

Water usually flows down the roof toward the eave. The rake edge guides the side boundary of the roof but doesn’t act as a gutter. A drip edge is a metal piece that helps direct water away from roof materials and trim.

During fascia repair, the rake edge helps show where damage begins. Soft wood, loose trim, or gaps near this edge can affect nearby siding and roof parts. A repair may include removing damaged material, checking the attachment area, and sealing the joint.

From the AGM Gutters team

When we inspect fascia near a rake edge, we check the sloped trim, the wood behind it, and nearby siding. We look for soft spots, open joints, and loose fasteners. Our team also checks how the roof edge meets the eave before planning fascia repair.

Rake Edge in Practice: A Real-World Example

A home may have damaged wood along the sloped roof edge above a side wall. Fascia repair can replace the affected section and close the joint where the rake trim meets the eave.
