What Is a Gutter Spike?

A gutter spike is a long fastener that secures a gutter to the fascia board behind it. The spike passes through the gutter’s front and back edges, often through a tubular ferrule that holds the gutter shape. Its condition affects how firmly the gutter stays attached during routine drainage and weather exposure.

Key Takeaways About Gutter Spike

  • A tubular ferrule can support the gutter between attachment points.
  • Loose spikes may leave the gutter sagging or pulling away.
  • A gutter spike is not the same as a concealed hanger.

How Gutter Spike Works

A gutter spike passes through the gutter channel and into the fascia board. A tubular ferrule sits inside the gutter and helps keep the sides from being pulled together as the spike tightens. The fastener must enter sound wood to hold properly.

During gutter repair, a loose spike may be removed, checked, or replaced. The repair also includes checking the nearby fascia because soft or damaged wood cannot hold a fastener well. A hidden hanger attaches from inside the gutter and supports the gutter under its back edge, so the two systems require different repair methods.

From the AGM Gutters team

When we inspect a gutter spike, we check whether the fastener still grips sound fascia and whether the gutter has pulled away. We also look at the ferrule and nearby wood before choosing a repair method. A new spike cannot correct weak fascia by itself.

Gutter Spike in Practice: A Real-World Example

A gutter along a home’s eave begins to sag where one fastener has loosened. During gutter repair, the spike and surrounding fascia are checked so the attachment can be restored without leaving the gutter out of alignment.
