What Is a Weep Hole?

A weep hole is a small opening in siding, flashing, or another exterior assembly that lets trapped water drain to the outside. The opening supports drying behind the surface and helps prevent water from collecting within wall materials. Weep holes commonly appear near the lower edge of siding systems.

Key Takeaways About Weep Hole

  • A weep hole is an opening, not a fastener or sealant joint.
  • Blocked openings can keep moisture trapped behind siding.
  • Weep holes are not the same as soffit vents.

How Weep Hole Works

A weep hole provides a planned drainage path through an exterior surface. Water that reaches the back of siding or flashing can move downward and exit through the opening. The location near a lower edge helps gravity carry moisture away from the wall assembly.

Openings must remain clear so water can leave without collecting behind the siding. During siding repair, the surrounding panel, flashing, and drainage plane need careful inspection. A blocked opening may hold moisture, while a covered opening can interrupt the intended drainage path. A weep hole does not serve as a ventilation opening for an attic or soffit.

From the AGM Gutters team

When we inspect siding damage, we check whether each visible weep hole remains open and whether nearby flashing directs water toward it. We also look for paint, caulk, debris, or replacement siding that may cover the drainage path.

Weep Hole in Practice: A Real-World Example

A siding repair may expose a lower panel with a weep hole partly covered by caulk. The repair should preserve the opening so moisture behind the siding can drain outside.
